The Department Head, Gynecologic Oncology, BC Cancer – Victoria (centre) working in partnership with key operational leaders and in alignment with the PHSA mission, vision, and values, is responsible for providing leadership, strategic planning, and oversight for the Gynecologic Oncology Department at that centre with respect to the clinical care provided by the department, and the professional practice and conduct among members of the department.

Leadership, Planning and Administration

• Assists the Program Medical Director, Gynecologic Oncology, BC Cancer - Victoria in establishing terms of reference, policies and procedures governing the operation of the Department, in consultation with the Department’s members, Program Medical Director, and EMD.
• Participates in the leadership structure within the Centre, providing input from the perspectives of Gynecologic Oncology clinical program area.
• Maintains up-to-date awareness and understanding of new technologies and advancements in the clinical program area. Advocates changes in practice that have the potential to benefit patient care and service delivery.
• Makes recommendations to MAC concerning appointments, and re-appointments.

Quality and Performance

• Responsible for assisting the Program Medical Director, Gynecologic Oncology BC Cancer – Vancouver in monitoring the quality of medical care provided to patients by members of the Department through processes defined in the Medical Staff Rules.
• Supports the development of regional quality programs for the specific clinical program area, ensures alignment between provincial and regional quality programs for the specific clinical area.
• Assists in the monitoring of performance metrics and contractual obligations of departmental members
• Participates in accreditation standards performance pertaining to the Gynecologic Oncology Department.

Policies and Standards

• Supports the development of standards of clinical practice and professional behavior for the Department, as delineated by BC Cancer policies, the Medical Staff Bylaws and Medical Staff Rules.
• Contributes to the monitoring of compliance and alignment with practice standards within the clinical program.

Medical staff management

• Conducts new staff orientation and annual reviews of BC Cancer Gynecologic Oncology staff according to the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and departmental rules and procedures.
• Assists in the fostering and mentoring of the professional development of individuals in the Department including research, education and other developmental activities.
• Provides on-going support of departmental members, from on-boarding to departure, ensuring compliance with BC Cancer and PHSA policies.
• Identifies training, learning and other developments opportunities for medical staff, in collaboration with the Department Head, for medical staff within that discipline.
• Supports the department head in Investigation of concerning physician behaviour, and delivery of patient care, and where appropriate assists in the initiation of disciplinary procedures in accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws, PHSA Medical Staff Rules and Health Authority policies.
• Participates in the development and maintenance of schedules for clinical coverage for Gynecologic Oncology in the region to ensure clinical services are maintained for regularly scheduled and out of hours coverage.
• Arranges and chairs departmental meetings as required.

Academic

• Maintains academic credentials suitable to the position and its responsibilities.
• Ensures a constructive and positive working relationship with the relevant clinical program personnel at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and/or other BC Cancer-affiliated universities.
• Ensures responsiveness and alignment to the standards and requirements of the provincial residency training program for the scope of the regional centre.
• Collaborates with academic representatives and supports the Gynecologic Oncology department’s medical staff to develop and maintain a comprehensive undergraduate and post-graduate medical training program.

Workforce Planning (in conjunction with Medical Affairs)

• Participates in the development of long-term workforce and human resource plans for the regional Gynecologic Oncology department, working in collaboration with the Department Head.
• Supports leadership development and succession planning for the Gynecologic Oncology Department.
• The Agency will provide the Corporation with the support, technology, material and supplies as reasonably required to provide the Services during the Term.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an approved medical school with a specialist fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology and 5 years of clinical experience practicing as a Gynecologist
• Eligibility for or licensing by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC
• Eligibility for or appointment to the medical staff of BC Cancer
• Demonstrated leadership attributes including expertise in Gynecology, credibility, motivation, collaboration and consensus building skills

Successful candidates will have:

• Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
• Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
